On the 1st and 2nd of March, Wiltshire gymnastic centre in Melksham held its annual South West regional grades competition. Fourteen Academy gymnasts entered this competition, six Academy gymnasts earned distinctions, five medals were won, and eight Academy gymnasts made the South West team and will go on to represent the region in the fourth coming National grade finals to be held in Birmingham.
On the Saturday, three of the Academy’s youngest gymnasts took to the floor in Compulsory grade 4. The Academy dominated the top two positions with Imogen Chan winning gold and top scoring every piece of apparatus, followed very closely by silver medalist Libby Lockett.
These girls will now represent the South West in May. April Maslen excelled herself by coming fifth, achieving the third highest scores on vault and beam.
On the Sunday nine year old Billie-Jayne Corbett, and ten year old Hollie Moore made the south west team in club grade 4. Billie placed fourth and excelled on the beam obtaining the second highest score. Hollie took home the silver medal and placed third on floor and beam and top scored vault.
Three other Academy gymnasts also participated in Club Grade 4 passing with ease. Mattie Jones, Laoishe MacCana and Olivia Newnham. These club grade 4 gymnasts fought of stiff competition from 30 other gymnasts.
Jessica Pointon and Maisie Dodds both passed club grade 3 with a distinctions. Jessica Pointon , excelled on the vault by top scoring. Maisie Dodds achieved the second highest score on bars and finished the competition in fourth place, securing a place for a second year in the South West grade 3 team.
National final experts Charlotte Bennett and Ruby Harrold will also go to Birmingham to see if they can improve on the National team silver medal, that the girls won last year. Charlotte managed to keep her title for another year as Club Grade 2 Champion, by top scoring beam and bars. Ruby Harrold took home the silver medal, top scoring floor. Both gymnasts earned distinctions.
